My hand in this photograph gives an
idea of the small size. Once framed such wilderness landscapes sold
like
hotcakes.
Another example with hand showing the
small size
A pond close to Algonquin Park. It is
the basis of a large detailed painting of the same location (see below
for later developed version)
A scene beside road at Buckhorn, Ont
from 2001. I am challenged by any
scene including this scene with fallen trees
1995 -In that year I painted small paintings left and right because
they sold well in galleries in Toronto and elsewhere,
From 2003 - a marshy location beside
the highway
Spring melt creates rushing creeks.
This painting shows my impressionist technique to capture the energy
Capturing the colour and liquidity of
water, rocks. driftwood in bay of a large lake
Capturing the character of a
landscape near Burleigh Falls with impressionistic technique
I have a special attraction to
paiinting water
From 2001 - falls at Lasswade
(near Apsley)
Capturing fall colours along driveway
It is not easy to make leaves look three dimensional as opposed to flat
From 2004 - evening scene on Eels
Lake with windswept pines on a point
Snowy trees beside the winter road
Some such paintings inspired larger
paintings that include an animal
This small painting inspired a later
painting with a wolf
Sun lights up the leaves in
foreground trees beside shore
From 1999 - a scene back in the bay
from my location. This inspired a larger painting with a kingfisher in
the foreground
. .
I was attracted to the colours on the
lake shoreline as well as the rocks and driftwood
The birch tree is attractive and
allows such a painting in which the black branches provide a
design
I tried a more impressinistic
technique of a field behind a fence
Early morning at Bon Echo
Experiment to give this scene a more
abstract impressionist treatment. This painting is a little larger than
the small ones. I cannot say I like doing this kind of art because I
like to explore detail.
Comment:
I painted
anything that caught my interest - the
scientist in me - and the above small paintings represent only a small
example of the hundreds I generated over decades. (I didn't even
photograph every one)

EXAMPLES OF LARGER LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS
-
up to 20" x 30" -
The larger landscapes are from about
this
size to twice this size
The purpose was to provide more detail so that the viewer could
experience more of the scene at the same distance of down to about
arm's length
The
south shore of Eels Lake
This was a study in light shining
down to the shore of a creek
In this painting I was able to
control the arrangement of lilypad leaves for the design and place the
flower at a focal point
This was a large detailed landscape painting to which I added a heron
in the sky. Painted in high detail in a 20"x30" size
Sunlit lake island in winter
I saw the colours of leaves and
grasses against a rock very attractive and I was able to adjust their
locations in order to make the design more interesting
The large painting inspired by the
scene first created in the small painting High detail level on 20" x 30" painting
This is one of the few landscapes not
depicting the wildermess
I caught this scene when driving
south
from Temagami in the early morning. I designed the elements to create a
balanced abstract design (this large painting is available)
Comment; This is only a selection of
large landscapes.
Note though that
many wildlife paintings are mostly landscapes. the animal being placed
in the landscape. See the next Wildlife Art selections for examples
